Review from the Vortex jazz club website
A good-sized, supportive (if a little noisy) crowd turned out for Vocals@Vortex (Monday, 23). The point of these occasions is to provide a showcase for up-and-coming singer-songwriters, an opportunity seized with both hands by Cork-born singer Aisling Stephenson.
She has a strong, flexible contralto voice, which she warmed up with a couple of jazz standards, the Ellington/Russell classic ’Do Nothin’ Till You Hear from Me’ and the archetypal Jobim tune, ’Desafinado’, on which she combined an almost conversational intimacy with just the right amount of drama.
It was her own songs, though, that truly allowed her to show what she could do, requiring her as they did to inject considerable amounts of soulful yearning into her delivery of their affecting lyrics. Given that she’s also possessed of a confident but not cocky stage manner, she should (by rights, but what have they ever had to do with success?) go far.
