Zambian Born, 20 Year old female, Chitwila Jacqueline Namfukwe a.k.a. Twila J is an up and coming RnB/Soul singer now based in Luton, Bedfordshire.
Twila J is a young, talented and flamboyant entertainer, with a soulful voice to listen out for this year and those to come.
Born in the Copperbelt province in Kitwe, Zambia, Twila J is the fourth child in a family of 5 siblings.
She moved to the UK at 15 years of age and schooled at Challney High School for girls at G.C.S.E level.
Her love for music began at the age of 9 and she would sing in concerts held by her school at the end of every school term back home in Zambia.
In her last year at Challney High, Twila was the final winner for the best singer/songwriter in her high school. This competition was held in every high school in Luton. Each school would have its own winner who would then represent their school on a compilation CD called "WHAT’S THE WORD?”
Twila’s face was used for the album cover.
After finishing school, Twila attended a year at Luton Sixth Form College and studied Health and social care, a completely different direction from music. It was something that she was passionate about. Twila completed and passed her Health and Social Care course with MERIT, after which she pursued a National Diploma in Music Technology at Bedford College.
A year and a half into the course Twila J had attained a wealth of knowledge and experience on how the studio works. She made the decision that the performing, singing and writing part of music is what she was more passionate about and she had the desire to get more experience than just the studio, which to her was like a comfort zone.
The urge to perform to a live audience grew and so Twila J tried out for various competitions such as THE X-FACTOR and UK UNSIGNED. She was one of the winners for the best singer/songwriter category in one of the UK Unsigned show-cases.
Twila J then moved away from competitions and started to independently raise money, working as a Sales Consultant for Next Retail in order to record her first single/album. At the same time, she was creating a fan base between Luton and London by performing in events like The Live lounge (Hat Factory, Luton), Miss Southern Africa’s fund-raising events for African children (London), Pre Brazilian party (Teatro club, London), Zambia 42nd independence day (London’s Club N-tyce), Network Live (The Hill, London).
June 26th, 2007 was a very important day for Twila J as she independently released her first EP single here in the UK - "Believe in yourself", featuring the tracks ‘Why’, ‘Raindrops’ and ‘Believe in yourself’ along with a video interview about who Twila J is. The single is available for purchase in HMV Luton at £2.99.
Not forgetting where she comes from, Twila J also released the single in Zambia two days after its release in the UK. Physically flying there to do so, Twila promoted it on Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation’s (ZNBC) ‘Kwacha Good morning’ show and ‘Smooth Talk’ which are both high rated TV shows in the country and also radio such as Radio Phoenix – ‘Soul Nation’ and ‘Local Rhythms’ count down.
Since leaving college, Twila has managed to secure various gigs to perform and showcase, recorded and released her first single, Networked with respectable people in the industry, done radio and TV, magazine and newspaper interviews between Zambia and the UK.
